What this page covers
This is for people with little or no borrowing record in the UK: what evidence may help us understand your circumstances, what affects the cost and when it makes sense to wait. A thin credit file is a data gap, not a black mark; every application is assessed individually, subject to status.
Soft credit check via Creditsafe at quote stage — your permission required for any hard search. Read the full soft-check explanation.
If your history has marks on it rather than nothing on it, our guide to leasing with imperfect credit is the one you want.
Who this is for
There are plenty of ordinary reasons for having little borrowing history here. You might recognise yourself in one of these situations:
What you can show us
Start with documents that show who you are, where you live and what you can afford. We may ask for the evidence below and will explain which documents are relevant to your application.
- Proof of identity — a passport, BRP or share code, as appropriate to your circumstances
- Proof of UK address — a tenancy agreement, council tax document or utility bill
- UK bank account statements — typically 3–6 months; tell us if you have less available
- Income evidence — payslips or an employment contract; for the self-employed, invoices, contracts or an SA302 where it exists
- An employer letter, where relevant
- An overseas credit report, where one is available
If you have only just arrived, you may not have all of this yet. Gather what you have and tell us which documents are missing so we can explain what else we need to assess your application.
When something else might suit better
Moving countries can make your budget hard to pin down. If you are still working out your regular outgoings or cannot yet provide the evidence needed, waiting may be more sensible than committing to a lease. If owning the vehicle is your aim, explore Rent to Buy and talk through whether it fits your circumstances.
What affects the price
The vehicle, lease length, mileage and initial rental all shape the quote. A larger initial rental may be an option to discuss, but it does not buy approval. We still need to consider whether the monthly payments fit your income and outgoings.
There is no single price we can attach to an empty file. Call us with your budget and circumstances so we can discuss the options and explain any quote before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lease a car with no UK credit history?
It may be possible, subject to status. We consider your income, address and supporting documents, so a thin credit file is only part of the assessment. Gather proof of identity, UK address and income to help us assess your circumstances. Decisions are never automated on the file alone, and approval is not guaranteed.
Do I need a UK bank account?
UK bank account statements are part of the evidence we may ask for, usually covering 3–6 months. If your account is newer, start with the statements you have alongside proof of address and income. If you do not yet have a UK account, call us to discuss what evidence is available.
Does the soft check work if I have no file?
A soft search still runs and needs a match on your identity and address, which may be harder when there is little UK data. Have proof of identity and UK address ready, such as a passport and a tenancy agreement, council tax document or utility bill. These are among the supporting documents we may ask for when assessing your application.
How much history do you need?
There is no published minimum length of UK history. What matters is that your identity and address can be verified and your income evidenced. A few months of UK bank statements usually helps; we typically ask for 3–6 months, but tell us if you have less available.
Can I lease a van for work if I have just arrived?
It may be possible after an individual assessment. An employment contract or employer letter may help explain your work; if you work for yourself, invoices or signed contracts may help show your income. Gather these alongside proof of identity and UK address before choosing a van.
Will a bigger initial rental help?
A larger initial rental changes the quote, but it does not guarantee approval or remove the need to show that the monthly payments are affordable. Work out what you can comfortably pay upfront and each month, taking your regular outgoings into account.
