What this page covers
This page is for people who have come to the UK to study or research, have funding, and have been refused by mainstream finance because there is little about them in UK data. We consider funding, documents and circumstances individually.
If you would like the fuller explanation of why an empty UK file trips up automated decisions, read our guide to thin credit files.

Who this is for
Your studies and family arrangements might look like one of these. These are starting points for a conversation, rather than a list of people we can automatically help:
Why students usually get a “no”, and what we look at instead
Most mainstream lenders lean on an automated score. For a student who arrived last month, that can mean a refusal before anyone reads the paperwork.
Here, a person reads your documents and considers your funding and affordability. We may be able to help, but we will also say plainly when a lease does not fit. Explain how your funding arrives and what it needs to cover alongside the car.
What you can show us
We may ask for the documents below to understand your circumstances. Start with what you have; we will explain which evidence would help us assess your application.
- Passport and current visa status — an eVisa share code (or a BRP if you still hold one), whichever applies to you
- Enrolment letter, CAS or student ID
- Bank statements — UK or overseas if that is where your funding sits; typically three to six months, and tell us if you have less
- Sponsor, scholarship or family-funding letter
- Proof of address — halls contract, tenancy or university letter
- Driving licence
If you are missing something, tell us which; we will say what else would help.
Driving on a non-UK licence
Most people who come to live in Great Britain can drive on a valid full licence from their home country for 12 months from the date they became resident. After that, the rules depend on where the licence was issued; check GOV.UK for your licence and country.
You arrange insurance yourself. Insurers vary in how they treat overseas licences, so ask before choosing a car and include insurance in your budget.
Terms that fit an academic year
Flexi lease terms start from 6 months. Depending on your dates, 6, 9 or 12 months may cover a term, a two-term stay or a full year; September and January intakes both work. Plan around the journeys you expect during holidays as well as teaching weeks.
You pay an initial rental, then monthly. See initial rental explained for the difference between 1.5 months and 3 months upfront. If your course runs on, the term can usually be discussed; talk to us before the end date.
Studying at the University of Exeter?
Looking for a student car lease in Exeter? First Flexi Lease is based at Marsh Barton, and you can come and see the car first. Handover can be at Marsh Barton or delivered to your address.
Exeter is same-day delivery territory; discuss availability and timing with us. See our Exeter car leasing page for the local details. If you are studying elsewhere, we arrange delivery across the UK when preparing your quote.
When something else might suit better
For a visit under six months, a flexi lease is unlikely to fit; car hire may be more suitable. If you do not yet have a licence you can use here, sort that first.
If you only drive occasionally, a car club or public transport may cost less. Think about how often you would use the car before committing to regular payments alongside your study costs.
What affects the price
The vehicle, term length, mileage and initial rental shape your quote. A larger initial rental changes the monthly figure but does not buy approval; we still consider whether the payments fit your funding.
Call with your budget and course dates so we can discuss an international student car lease in the UK that may suit your plans. Include regular living costs when working out what you can comfortably spend.
Frequently asked questions
Can an international student lease a car in the UK?
It may be possible, subject to status, after we consider your funding, documents and circumstances. A scholarship or support from family may help explain your budget, but neither settles the decision on its own. We will give you an honest answer about whether we can help.
Do I need a UK credit history?
A UK credit file is not the deciding factor: we look at your funding, address and supporting documents individually, subject to status. An empty UK file can trip up automated decisions elsewhere. Our fuller guide to thin credit files explains the background.
Can I drive on my home-country licence?
Most people who come to live in Great Britain can drive on a valid full home-country licence for 12 months from becoming resident. After that, the rules depend on where your licence was issued; check GOV.UK for your licence and country.
What documents will you ask for?
We may ask for your passport and current visa status, enrolment evidence, bank statements, funding letters, proof of address and driving licence. The relevant documents depend on your circumstances. Tell us what you have available, including where your funding is held.
Can I lease for one academic year?
A 12-month flexi lease may fit a full academic year, with terms starting from 6 months. Tell us your course dates and expected mileage so we can discuss a suitable term. Your application still needs an individual assessment.
What happens when my course ends?
You hand the car back at the end of the agreed lease term, which may differ from your course end date. If your plans change or your research runs on, talk to us before the end date. We can discuss what may be possible then.
Do you deliver to Exeter halls?
Exeter is within our same-day delivery area, so delivery to your halls address may be arranged, or you can collect at Marsh Barton. Confirm timing and access with us when arranging handover. Delivery elsewhere in the UK is arranged on quote.
