Eligibility & credit

Car leasing with bad credit

We see more than your credit score.

A bumpy credit record does not have to be the end of the conversation. We start with a soft check through Creditsafe, look at the facts behind the numbers, and give you a straight answer either way.

Subject to status. We don't offer guaranteed approval — and we won't pretend to.

First Flexi Lease is a trading name of Oak First Investments Limited. We are a credit broker, not a lender. We can introduce you to selected finance providers where appropriate. All applications are subject to status and eligibility.

The situation, honestly

Some vehicle finance and leasing applications involve a full credit search early in the process. We start differently. Our initial eligibility process uses a soft check so we can understand your circumstances before deciding whether a full application is appropriate. A hard credit search is normally visible to other lenders and may affect future credit assessments.

Here is exactly how the soft credit check via Creditsafe works.

How the soft check works

Soft check at quote, hard search only with your permission

A soft search is recorded on your file in a section other lenders generally cannot see, and where one is carried out on you we will tell you in advance. If something needs further review, a hard search may be required — but only with your permission. We will always ask first.

Subject to status. We do not offer guaranteed approval.

Two situations. One way of looking at them.

Don't let a limited trading history or a bumpy credit record hold you back. We look beyond the numbers and work with the facts behind them.

A bumpy credit record, personally

Missed payments and old defaults tell us what happened. They do not tell us who you are now, or what you can comfortably afford for your daily drive or family car this month. We start with the affordability picture and work outwards from there.

Sounds like you if

  • Missed payments in the last few years
  • Defaults that have since been settled
  • A CCJ on your file
  • A thin credit file because you have rarely borrowed

Evidence we work with

  • Recent payslips
  • Three months of bank statements
  • Proof of current address
  • Photo ID

Bad credit applications — what the decision is actually based on

Honest list, not a scare list. Some things make approval harder; some make it impossible. Most are not deal-breakers on their own.

Affordability against committed outgoings

Affordability is an important part of our assessment. We look at your committed outgoings and the information available to us to determine whether the proposed monthly rental appears sustainable.

Pattern, not single events

One missed payment from three years ago reads very differently to ongoing late payments. Context matters.

Active formal arrangements

Defaults, CCJs, IVAs, bankruptcy or insolvency issues do not automatically determine the outcome. Eligibility depends on your current circumstances, the type of agreement and any applicable provider criteria. We will explain what options, if any, are available.

Identity and address verification

We carry out identity, address, fraud-prevention and, where relevant, business-verification checks as part of our eligibility and compliance process.

Car leasing with poor credit — what changes the price

The same things affect every car lease — vehicle, term, mileage, and initial rental. Your credit history does not automatically determine the product you receive, but it may affect which vehicles, terms and initial-rental structures are available. We will explain the available options and costs clearly before you decide.

Initial rental

Depending on your circumstances, a higher initial rental may increase the range of vehicles or structures available. We will explain the effect on the overall cost before you decide.

Term & mileage

A shorter term and an honestly estimated mileage keep the monthly number predictable.

The vehicle

An established, lower-value model with strong residuals gives a decision more room than a brand-new high-value car.

How to lease a car with bad credit, start to finish

  1. 1

    Soft check via Creditsafe

Online or by phone. Identity, address and fraud checks. Does not normally affect your credit score the same way as a full lending application.

  2. 2

    Honest indication

We come back with a yes, no, or yes-but. If we cannot help, we tell you why.

  3. 3

    Vehicle & terms

Together we sort vehicle, term, mileage, initial rental.

  4. 4

    Full agreement

Hard search runs only here, with your agreement.

  5. 5

    You collect or take delivery

And you get on with using the car.

The questions people ask first

“Will other lenders see the initial eligibility check?”

Generally, no. A soft search may be recorded on your credit file, but it is not normally visible to other lenders in the same way as a hard application search.

“What if I’m declined?”

We tell you, plainly, and where we can we say what would change the answer. No hard-search footprint at this stage, and no pressure to proceed.

“Will you judge me?”

No. Plenty of the people we approve were turned down elsewhere first — that’s rather the point.

Frequently asked questions

Will bad credit stop me leasing a car?

Often, yes — subject to status. A lower score narrows the options rather than closing them. We start with a soft check, look at affordability and your wider circumstances, and tell you honestly where you stand before anything touches your file.

Will checking with you affect my credit score?

A soft credit check via Creditsafe does not normally affect your credit score in the same way a full lending application search does. A hard search only ever happens with your permission, once you want to proceed.

Can I lease a car with a default or a CCJ?

Frequently, yes. Age and context matter more than the entry itself — a settled default from four years ago reads very differently to a live one from last month. Tell us about it up front and we will factor it in properly.

Can I get car leasing with bad credit and no deposit?

Sometimes. A larger initial rental usually widens what is available to you, so a no-deposit arrangement is harder with a bumpy record — but it is worth asking rather than assuming. We will tell you what is realistic for your situation.

How do I lease a car with poor credit?

Get a quote, let us run the soft check, and send the evidence that fits your circumstances — payslips and bank statements if you are leasing personally, SA302s and contracts if you are trading. We come back with a straight answer, normally within one working day.

What if I am declined?

We tell you why, in plain terms, and where we can we suggest what would change the answer — a larger initial rental, a different vehicle, or a few months of clean payment history. We do not leave you guessing.
